Moorti (Hindi: मूर्ती) is a 1945 Hindi film starring Khursheed, Motilal, Padma Banerjee, Yashwant Dube, Kamal Jamindar, Kaneez, Tara Bai etc. The film was produced by Ranjit Movietone and directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. Music was directed by the famous music composer Bulo C Rani. The film is remembered for the songs sung by Khursheed. It was also the first film where playback singer Mukesh got noticed.

Anokhi Ada (1948)

Anokhi Ada (Hindi: अनोखी अदा) is a 1948 Hindi movie produced and directed by the legendary Mehboob Khan. Music was directed by another legend, Hindi film music maestro, Naushad. The film starred Surendra, Naseem Banu, Zeb Qureshi, Murad, Cuckoo, etc.



Surendra is a rich man's son who leaves his father's home to live as a vagabond. He encounters the heroine who is very poor and has nothing to eat. He gives her some rotis. Police mistake him for a thief, brings him to the police station where he is bailed out by his father's Munshi. Meanwhile the heroine's brother comes under a car and dies. She being bankrupt, leaves the house. They meet again in a train and fall in love. But the train falls off the track and suffers an accident. The heroine loses her memory and in a lost state of mind walks out of the hospital into a professor's house nearby. He takes pity on her and allows her to live in his house. He begins liking her and knows of her from the doctor who attended her in the hospital. They plan to get married but Surendra who is a former student of professor finds her and appeals to the professor to let her go and let them marry. The professor agrees but the heroine still doesn't remember him. In the end her memory comes back and they get married.

Dushman (1939)

Dushman (Hindi: दुश्मन) is a 1939 Hindi film starring K L Saigal, Leela Desai, Najmul, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nimmo, Devbala and Manorama. The film was directed by Nitin Bose and produced by New Theatres. Music direction was by Pankaj Mullick. The film is remembered for some of the most beautiful songs sung by K L Saigal. Not much is available as far as the storyline of the film goes, so I am skipping it this time. Just to remind you, the film may have more songs, but I am posting only those that are available with me.

Vidyapati (1937)

Vidyapati (Hindi: विद्यापति) is a 1937 Hindi film directed by Debaki Bose. It starred Pahadi Sanyal and Kanan Devi in lead roles. Other actors were Prithviraj Kapoor, Chhaya Devi, K C Dey, Kidar Sharma and Leela Desai. Music was composed and directed by R C Boral.

The film is about Mithila's King Shiv Singh's (Prithviraj Kapoor) love for his wife while chronicling the influence of the pacifist court poet Vidyapati (Pahadi Sanyal). Invited to the royal court by the king, Vidyapati arrives with his faithful follower Anuradha (Kanan Devi). Queen Laxmi (Chhaya Devi) falls in love with the poet, much to the distress of the king. The king falls ill and starts neglecting his royal duties until Anuradha persuades him that true love does not need reciprocation. The queen, equally distressed by her divided loyalties, contemplates suicide, encouraged by the prime minister who is worried by the nefarious impact of Vidyapati's poetry on the king.

Amrit Manthan (1934)

Amrit Manthan (Hindi: अमृत मंथन) is a 1934 Marathi/Hindi film produced by Prabhat Films and directed by V Shantaram. The film starred Chandra Mohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Sureshbabu Mane, Varde, Kelkar and Shanta Apte. The film was the first to use a telephoto lens. The film had a Buddhist theme and its most famous shot was a close-up of a priest's right eye, something that staggered audiences back then. It was also the first film produced in the new well equipped studio of Prabhat at Pune. The story was based on abolishing the practice of human as well as animal sacrifice to any God or Goddess.



Huge sets and costumes were notable in this film. Chandra Mohan got a break in the Hindi version of this film and became a famous actor. Hindi version of this film was the first Hindi film to celebrate Silver Jubilee. The film was shown at International Film Festival, Venice. Some newspapers in London gave the coverage with the photographs from the film and the studio.

This classic opens with a sensational low-angle circular track movement as Chandika cult followers meet in a dungeon of flickering lights and deep shadow. As the more rationalist King Krantivarma (Varde) banned human or animal sacrifices from the increasingly fanatical festivals dedicated to the goddess, the cult's high priest (Chandra Mohan) orders the hapless Vishwagupta (Kelkar) to kill the king. He obeys but is then betrayed by the perfidious priest and caught. His son Madhavgupta (Sureshbabu Mane) and daughter Sumitra (Shanta Apte) together with the princess (Tarkhad) and the people finally overthrow the priest.
